7 steps 6 legs. Video & drawings made during the wait.

3-part project that studies the emergence of a butterfly from its chrysalis. The project comprises a 6-minute video that shows the emergence in real time from the moment the butterfly breaks open the chrysalis, to its unfolding and starting to dry its wings. The video is accompanied by a version of a Patti Smith song, Fireflies, by Berlin group Discoteca Flaming Star. The lyrics of the song are a slow countdown in steps from 11 to 7.

The drawings, which were made while I waited for the right moment to film, are a way of evoking associations, and of thinking about the subject matter and exploring aspects that are not evident in the video, such as the sleep of the chrysalis, its amazing form and construction, the hardness/softness of the butterfly, etc.

The 3rd part of the project is an edition of it in the form of artists book & DVD.
